Mayor Barlow asks young artists for submissions for Oswego Springboard Mural Project

Spring is almost here and that means we are in preparation for the start of the Springboard Mural Project.  Starting our 11th year of artwork, the mural project is actively seeking interested youth artists who would like to create a piece of artwork and paint it in a public space in the City of Oswego. Youth and families are welcome to participate. Children ages 12 and under must have a parent/guardian in attendance with them at all times during painting. Welcoming any and all levels of skill and ability! Family members are welcome to submit entries as well. This can be a family event!

The mural project is a youth focused initiative, with the design concept and implementation being directed by local young people with the support of the City of Oswego, the Oswego City-County Youth Bureau and AmeriCorps.  Murals are located on West Linear Park along the river near the Utica Street Bridge and are designed and created by local students. Painting will begin over summer vacation.

Oswego Mayor Billy Barlow said “our art mural program beautifies our lovely west side riverwalk and engages our youth to participate in beautifying our community and take pride in the appearance of one of our greatest assets. This year, we are expanding our project to other locations as well. The mural project has been incredibly successful for quite some time and I am excited to continue this program this summer”.

The project was originally a City sponsored community development plan to address graffiti issues. It has continued on with that concern, but also grown into a community project that brings out our local youth talent and demonstrates community togetherness, making this a successful project year after year.

All applications and art submissions must be received no later than Friday May 24, 2019. All submissions approved by the Youth Bureau, will then require approval from the City of Oswego Common Council. Specific details for artwork submissions can be found on the project application.
