Oswego Community Safety Day Scheduled for May 7

We are proud to announce our upcoming “Oswego Community Safety Day” scheduled for Saturday, May 7th in the Port Authority owned parking lot adjacent to the Oswego Fire Department headquarters. The event will feature a host of local public safety and service agencies on hand to help the community stay safe. The event will be held rain or shine, and will run from 10am to 2pm.

This event is a combination of the popular “Bike Rodeo”, a bicycle safety initiative focusing on helmet use and riding safety, and the “Open House” featuring numerous public safety agencies in the area. A major componentadded to this event is the addition of the Oswego County Stop DWI program. Bob Lighthall and his staff will be on hand with the pedal cars, fatal lvision goggles, and road course to help show the effects of impaired driving. The Oswego Police Department will be there creating safe child ID’s, and the Oswego County

Sheriff’s Department, and SUNY Police will be at the event helping to check child safety seats. The New York State Police will be bringing one of their “convincing” seat belt demonstrations, and the US Border Patrol will be on hand as well.

Our fire apparatus will be available for everyone to check out, and the kids will have a blast spraying water from one of our fire hoses. We understand “FirePup” and “Spot” may be making special appearances throughout the day, and we even expect Patches and Pumper to be driving around talking to the kids and seeing if they are thirsty! The Oswego County fire safety trailer will be on hand, teaching the kids all about how to stay safe and escape a fire. Our favorite facepainter will be supporting the event, and we’ll have balloons and fire hats available for the kids as well. Rumor has it that we may even have snocones available!

The US Coast Guard will be on hand, as well as the USCG Auxiliary and “Coastie”. Their boats are always a big hit with the crowd, and they’ll be covering how to stay safe on the water. We have several other groups supporting the event, such as Oswego County Opportunities, Head Start, VOW, the Oswego City / County Youth Bureau, Oswego County Health Department, and Oswego County Emergency Management.

MoveAlong, Inc. will be here with their adaptive bikes for people to try out, and they’ll also be bringing wheelchair basketball to the event!

We encourage the entire family to visit this event, there is something for everyone. Kids should bring their own bicycles for the safety course. We hope to see everyone on May 7th!
